Wi-Fi dead spots or a broadband problem? What to check first

Compare rooms, devices and wired connections before deciding whether a Wi-Fi problem needs new equipment or a broadband investigation.

An unreliable connection does not always mean that the broadband package is too slow. The first useful question is where the problem occurs. A few controlled comparisons can help separate a room-coverage issue, a single-device problem and a wider connection fault. This guide focuses on gathering clear evidence before changing settings or buying equipment.

Describe the problem in everyday terms

Record what actually fails: a video call breaks up, a document takes too long to open, or a device disconnects. Note the room, approximate time and affected device. Include whether other people were using the connection heavily. A short record of a repeatable problem is more useful than a general description such as bad internet. Avoid changing several settings while collecting this initial picture, because that makes comparisons harder.

Compare another room and another device

Try the same ordinary task near the router or access point, then in the room where the problem occurs. Where possible, compare a second device in those locations. Keep the task similar so that you are not comparing a short email with a large download. If the issue consistently follows one room, investigate coverage and the building layout. If it follows one device, review that device before redesigning the whole network.

Use a wired comparison where practical

If you have a suitable wired connection and equipment, repeat the task using it. Note the difference rather than treating one speed result as a diagnosis. A cable comparison can help identify whether the wireless part of the connection needs attention, but the cable, adapter and connected equipment also affect the result. If both wired and wireless use are poor, check for a known provider incident and gather the observations for your support contact.

Review placement before adding hardware

Consider where the existing equipment sits, which rooms it serves and what lies between them. Cupboards, furniture and the structure of a London property can complicate coverage. Additional equipment needs an appropriate connection back to the network and a considered location; another box beside the original router may not solve a distant-room problem. Before configuration changes, retain the existing settings and agree how the working arrangement will be restored if necessary.

Make one planned improvement and test again

Choose a change that follows the evidence, with an owner and a way to reverse it. Repeat the original tasks in the affected rooms afterwards, including a normal call or the application that was failing. Keep the before-and-after notes. Tech Support Inc supports network and Wi-Fi reviews across Central London, including Mayfair, with the aim of understanding how the home or office is actually used before proposing changes.
