INSIGHTS / PRIVATE CLIENT CYBERSECURITY

A practical cybersecurity
checklist for Private Clients.

Seven sensible controls that reduce risk without making everyday technology difficult to use.

Protect the accounts that unlock everything

Begin with the primary email account, because it can usually reset passwords for many other services. Use a unique password stored in a reputable password manager and enable multi-factor authentication. An authenticator app or security key provides stronger protection than text messages where the service supports it.

Review recovery email addresses and telephone numbers as well. Old or inaccessible recovery details can weaken an otherwise well-protected account.

Keep devices known and current

Maintain a simple record of the computers, phones, tablets and network equipment in use. Enable automatic security updates, device encryption and screen locks. Remove devices that are no longer needed from Apple, Google and Microsoft account portals before they are sold, recycled or passed to someone else.

For household staff or temporary users, provide separate accounts rather than sharing a principal password or device profile.

Plan for travel and unusual requests

Public Wi-Fi, loss or theft, and urgent messages create added risk when travelling. Use mobile data or a trusted connection for sensitive work, keep devices out of checked luggage and know how to locate or remotely lock them.

Agree a verification method for unusual payment, password or access requests. A quick call to a known number can prevent an impersonation attempt from becoming an incident.

Make recovery part of security

Backups should cover the information that would be difficult or impossible to replace, including documents and photographs held outside managed cloud services. Keep at least one protected copy separate from the everyday device and test that selected files can be restored.

Finally, record who should be contacted if an account or device is compromised. Fast, calm action often limits the impact.

A CONSIDERED NEXT STEP

Review the whole environment.

Technology risks rarely sit in isolation. A short review can identify priorities across people, devices, accounts, connectivity and recovery.
